WOMENS SUPPORT GROUP

Do you have a child going off to college this year?  Moving out?  Getting married?

        ::Library:Application Support:Microsoft:Office:Clipart:Personal:002804951.wmf

Feelings of sadness and loss related to the shifting roles women experience when children leave home is often referred to as “Empty Nest Syndrome”.

Would it help you to meet other women who are in the process of adjusting to similar changes in their family?

Not everyone experiences these changes the same.

Research suggests that those who experience the most long-term pain may have some of these things in common:

    • They consider change stressful and to be avoided.
    • Their marriage is rocky.
    • They worry that their children aren’t ready for adult responsibilities.
    • They have a weaker sense of self-worth: identity is tied to being a parent.
    • Their own experience of moving away from their parents was difficult.
    • Other “letting go” times, such as sending children to school, were painful.
    • They are full-time parents, with no other paid employment or self-employment.

Workshop:  Fostering Prosocial Change in Students: What to do When Talking Fails
Presenter: Charles Bauman, MFT ~ former AVCS Intern
Date: November 11th, 2011

Fostering Prosocial Change in Students: What to do When Talking Fails | Charles Bauman, Almaden Valley Counseling Services
A core societal responsibility instilled into educators is fostering prosocial change in their students. A lot of time is spent “talking to students” about the student's need to change - academic engagement, attitude, time management, behavior, etc. Unknowingly, most educators undermine the basic principles of the Change Process, and both students and educators become trapped in a Cycle of Irritation. Participants will gain insight into the Change Process, and specific strategies for facilitating a more positive "process" for promoting substantive change in their secondary students.
